After the first humble incandescent light bulb was invented, there has been no looking back. Rapid development has seen the production of a wide variety of light bulbs that are both functional and ornamental. Generally, people are familiar with light bulbs used for lighting up homes and offices. At times special bulbs are seen lighting up big areas on special occasions. These bulbs provide only a peek into the vast specialized field of specialty light bulbs.
There is, in fact, a separate branch of lighting known as specialty lighting. Specialty light applications include lights for greenhouses, reef aquariums, and commercial fixtures, including floodlights and exit signs.
A few other categories of specialty light bulbs used for general lighting are colored light bulbs, compact fluorescents, decorative bulbs, European lamps, fluorescent bulbs, HID lamps, and halogen lamps.
There is a section of specialty lamps that are used for graphic arts. These are scanner lamps, camera lamps, and plate burner lamps. Medical and other scientific fields also use several specialty bulbs. These are microscope lamps, optical lamps, diagnostic lamps, surgical lamps, dental lamps, germicidal lamps, and infra red lamps. Other lamps like aircraft lamps, sealed beams lamps, landscape lamps, low voltage lamps, metal halide lamps, projector lamps, and sign lamps also use specialty bulbs.
Photographic bulbs and railway light bulbs are also specialty bulbs used exclusively in two extremely different areas. Automotive LED bulbs are commonly used specialty bulbs. These bulbs last for a quite a while and are a good buy.
Projector light bulbs are used to illuminate projectors that are used for personal or business use. Tanning light bulbs function in a manner similar to full spectrum light bulbs, and provide a high intensity light. Tanning bulbs mainly emit ultraviolet A and B light that helps tan the skin. These bulbs are used by tanning salons to cater to customer needs.
There are various types of bulbs available to suit any conceivable lighting need. One just needs to go out and explore the market to find interesting options.
